You landed unexpectedly at an airport and now have to spend the night. You’ve gone to Travelers Aid and Airport Accommodations but they know of no rooms available or only have rooms starting at $200. You’ve gone to the hotel board (along with dozens of others) and soon find out there are no rooms at the hotels listed, much less at the cheap hotels and motels. Does it look like a night will be spent at the airport sitting on a chair for 12 hours or more?

It doesn’t have to be. Here’s a couple of simple tips that only insiders seem to know about but they just may land you a room and at a decent rate to boot.

Forget the obvious choices. EVERYBODY is going to the hotel board or standing in line at the airline counter asking the agents to find them a room. Others are warming up their laptops trying to access Expedia or Orbitz but if there are no rooms to be found directly, they likely won’t find any using an over-priced internet site. Here’s what the smart people do.

Find a phone book and look up motels for your area and call them direct. Hotels and motels that do not have an ‘airport phone’ are oftentimes overlooked by travelers at an airport and yet they have rooms available, even if at a high cost. Keep in mind one fact though; most local motels DO NOT have an ad in the yellow pages! Why? Because very little business comes from local residents! And it costs big bucks to place an ad, so it simply isn’t cost effective for motels to place an ad in a local directory. But motels CAN have a free listing with only their name so look for the section on lodging and scan the alphabetical listings.

Tip two: If you have a laptop, go ahead and look at Tripadvisor or Third Party sites and find hotels near your airport. (I like Tripadvisor because unlike Third Party internet sites, they will provide you with hotel phone numbers) Look for hotels more than 4 miles from the airport. These hotels will probably NOT be on the hotel board at the airport because they won’t have a free shuttle but are only $20 away by cab. One call might find you a room at $69 - $89 and even if a cab costs $40 r/t, you are still saving $70 or more versus what might be available through Airport Accommodations or the airport hotel board.

There are other options available but these two are by far the easiest and quickest. If you find the whole AREA is sold out (due to a convention or special event) you may have to resort to the more complicated options in order to find a room. Or you may simply decide it is better to save $100 - $200 and sleep on the ground or stay up all night reading. At least you will have tried the less obvious and will learn a valuable tip for the next time because as one who has slept on the ground before, I know it is not a pleasant option.

In a recent Russian poll it was revealed that the most popular NHL team in Russia is the New York Rangers. This in itself is not astounding, but the most likely explanation for it is quite a surprise.

In trying to understand exactly why Russians feel a bond (shaken, not stirred) with the Rangers, the three most obvious explanations that come to mind are:

1) Brighton Beach, home of the largest Russian community outside of the motherland, is located in New York City.

2) Alexei Kovalev, Alexander Karpovtsev, Sergei Nemchinov, and Sergei Zubov, who were the first Russian players to have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup, did so while members of the 1993-1994 New York Rangers.

3) The Rangers were the team who selected (with the 17th pick) the highly touted Russian Alexei Cherepanov in this year’s entry draft, which finally stopped his freefall from one of the top five prospects in the draft (as ranked by many scouting organizations).

In fact, none of these answers seems to be correct. As it turns out, the poll indicates that the Russian hockey fans root for the Rangers because they seem to have a soft spot in their hearts for Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr.

Jagr cherished his time in Omsk, while he played for Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League during the NHL lockout three years ago. This is supported by Jagr’s repeated vow that after his NHL career is over, he will return to Omsk to once again play for his former Russian team. Apparently Jagr loves the city of Omsk, as well as having great admiration for the Avangard Omsk team owner Roman Abramovich.

And apparently the Russian hockey fans have returned Jagr’s affections.

What was the great inspiration that made you say, “Yes, I want to start my own business?” Was it something inspiring someone said to you, or simply an insight that called to you on your own? You may recall the bounce in your step and a rush of adrenalin when you finally made the decision. You may even recall telling everyone you knew about it, making endless lists of ways this would work and within no time at all, you had begun.

You were certain of the time commitment involved, the dedication, your knowledge, and even your contacts that could help and understood that this was not going to be an tax mistakes success. Yet as months or even years past, you began to hear the same questions over and over in your head.

Can I really do this?

The most challenging part of having your own business is that you lose the camaraderie of co-workers and peers. Although at the time, that may have been exactly why you left, there were some positive sides to having a team to turn to. Even with a small team, you were able to bounce ideas off someone else and get feedback. In addition, when lacking energy and enthusiasm, you could often retrieve a little energy back by simply collaborating with them about anything on your mind. Perhaps sometimes even just a walk to the coffee pot was enough to get you back on track.

Yet in business on your own, the collaborating is done mostly in your head, with your own self-sabotaging thoughts. And while the conversation may vary, mostly it may sound like this: You can do this. Or: Maybe this isn’t for me.

The first few years of a small business will determine those that can make it and those that can’t and the biggest difference between the two will be the support they have as they begin to grow. If you can simply hold onto the inspiration that created energy and excitement when you first began, you can end up being a success story, not a statistic. Here are some simple strategies to help you do just that:

Talk the talk.
The truth is that as simple as it sounds, it works. If you truly want to create this new venture you will need to keep talking about it. Until it truly comes to be, which could be several months, the only thing that will keep it alive, will be your speaking. Talk to anyone you can think of that will support you in your endeavors. Talk to people who are knowledgeable on the subject and to those that will simply say just what you need to keep you going. Getting other people excited about your idea, will keep you excited as well.

Walk the walk.
Then begin to walk in a fashion that supports what you are talking about. Start living into it like it is not only going to occur, but is already occurring. You may think this sounds a bit arrogant, but the fact is that if you think like it will occur, you will be more apt to stick to your belief that it can occur….and it will. People around you will buy into it as well, which will keep you focused on your direction.

Create Support
Create a support system that will be in place whether you are feeling optimistic or not. Look through your local newspaper to find networking groups. Not only will these help you meet others in business, but it will keep the speaking alive, which will keep your business alive. Hire a Business Coach to meet with weekly. Just like famous athletes hire a tax mistakes to get them to the next level, a Business Coach will help you achieve goals that may now seem out of reach. Enroll in a Coaching Workshop. Group coaching is a great way to get the same results that you would from a personal coach, but also enables you to meet others in the same situation. The energy from the group alone will be enough to propel you into action each week and the best part is that most tax are done on the phone and about half the price of a private coaching session!

So, talk about it. Walk like it’s already yours. And when you start to feel that rush of energy starting to fade, talk about it even more, just a little bit louder, and call in the support.

You can make it happen.

Everyone knows Networking Rule Numero Uno - Don’t go out without your business card - although I’m constantly amazed by how many people don’t bring their cards to professional events. (Some kind of self-sabotage, I think.) Your card plays a major role in your prospect’s first impression of you, and you don’t often get more than one chance.

David Salanitro, owner of San Francisco-based, Oh Boy, A Design Company (415-834-9063), has an interesting take on business cards. He believes they’re essential, yet disposable, and he spreads his around like paper samples. “They’re not keepers. They’re scraps of paper that you throw at people. Their purpose is to create a first impression, over and over, to be there at the right moment, not to be kept as an heirloom.” Here are a few tips from Salanitro for making the most of your business cards:

1. Hand them to people when you meet them for the first time. They’ll remember your name better if they see it. Develop this as a reflex and don’t be shy if they don’t automatically reciprocate. Go ahead and ask for their card. It will help you remember their name, an invaluable marketing skill in itself.

2. Give them to people every time you meet them, not just the first time. This will avoid any embarrassment in case they forget your name. It doesn’t matter if they don’t keep the card; it will have already served its purpose.

3. Include one in everything you send out - intro letters, invoices, FYI’s, article tear sheets.

4. Carry them everywhere you go. Put a few in your wallet, especially for those unexpected marketing moments when you meet someone with their guard down, standing in line at the bank or post office.

If networking is the most effective marketing activity - and it is - then your business card is your networking ticket. (In fact, Salanitro’s card looks like a theatre ticket.) So whether you’re walking the dog or taking out the trash, but especially when you are in work mode, always carry your cards with you. You just never know who you’re going to meet and what they’re going to need.

The past ten years have marked Cambodia’s integration into regional, international organizations and other inter-governmental organizations; just to name a few: ASEAN (Association for South East Asian Nations), AFTA (Asian Free Trade Area), WTO (World Trade Organization), ILO (International Labour Organization), etc (I do not count other organzations that we have been members long ago). Cambodia’s membership with regional and international organizations ranks from economics to politics. Indeed, countless positive points: economic growth, poverty reduction, human resource development, etc, together with unavoidable social defects: gaps between the rich and poor, the employed and the unemployed, and unequal growth between cities and rural areas, etc, have been seen from this globalization aspect.

Cambodia is urgently needing one tool to survive in the globalization: Quality Diplomacy.

History has presented that Cambodia rarely had good relations with the neighbouring countries and international relations with other far-reaching countries almost never existed, plus its protracted warfare, Cambodia does need to boost its diplomacy and not just plain diplomacy, but “quality” diplomacy to benefit from globalization.

So what does “diplomacy” means? Not referring to the diplomatic theories, written by world famous legal publicists, in my personal sense and opinion, diplomacy means “Negotiation skill for national interests”. Because of Cambodia’s unacceptable diplomatic history, present non-existence of diplomatic education in the undergraduate or graduate schools, lack of diplomacy and international-relation specialists, how can Cambodia diplomats abroad argue for Cambodia’s national interests.

Drawing from all above facts, without delays, Cambodia is currently in need of quality diplomacy. This paper would serve as “revealing fact, rather than initiating problem-solution.”

Currently the federal government operates under the assumption that all members of society are 14th Amendment citizens; and therefore, it ensures “their” citizen’s privileges and obligations are protected, and that they have federal control over them wherever they reside. Great civilizations have always collapsed because they destroyed the value of their money. 5 OR you can invest in an IRA and the equation changes altogether depending on various factors. I heard one economist state that if most Americans use this money for consumption; it would help to stimulate the economy.

The 16th Amendment was passed by Congress in 1909, and was arguably ratified in 1913. We are the most technologically advanced nation in the world and have the ability to attack any spot on the face of the globe; we do not need to have massive numbers of troops and equipment all over the globe. “In the case of Murphy V IRS (2005), the Supreme Court stated: “The Sixteenth Amendment simply does not authorize the Congress to tax as “incomes” every sort of revenue a taxpayer may receive. Many people have incomes that are too high to be eligible for Roth IRA accounts (modified adjusted gross income must be below $116K single or $169K for a couple). For each child you have, you get an additional $300. The corporate entity enjoys a level of protection the citizen does not, therefore for that protection they pay a tax to the government.

It was not until the government started expanding into socialistic programs, wealth redistribution, and massive funding of other countries that they needed to steal from the American population. Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul puts it best, “you can’t solve the problem of inflation with more inflation. Government will still get the extra money that it would otherwise have had to tax us for. I guess the only thing I can justify is maybe the new window blinds and they are for my kid’s bedrooms. You can create a winning strategy, regardless of who wins the 2008 Presidential Election!. Funding the total operation of the government solely by constitutional taxation could be done if we were to remove the Federal Reserve, downsize the IRS, reduce overseas payouts (which amount to billions every year), cease to fund groups such as the UN, discard unnecessary social programs, and reduce our military footprint around the world.

I am tired of hearing about how Africa needs our help! I’m tired of listening to African people crying out for peace! I am tired of watching african children entranced in a state of starvation while flies crawl over there malnourished bodies. I’m tired of reading about how children are orphaned because both of their parents have died from aids. I’m tired of listening to other people moaning about how bad the African Government is at caring for its people, while they sit on there butts, sipping on pinot gris and smoking marlborough cigarettes. I’m tired of seeing and hearing all these things and doing nothing about it!

Oh I have sat there listening, commenting and even agreeing with people who think they know what is going on over there. Listening to how they would do a better job of running the country or providing for those who are unable to do so. How they would feed the starving, make well the sick and adopt the homeless!! I am sure they have a sincere desire to do something worthwhile, but I, like the rest of them have sat by and watched year after year while these amazing, resilient, war and poverty stricken people survive or not!

For those of you that fall into this category, I have some facts for your next, “how I am going to make a difference” speech.

Did you know that the life expectancy rate for Botswana is 35.49 Years old?

Did you know that the infant mortality rate for Sierra Leone is 165.4 out of 1000 live births?

Did you know that 33.38% of the adult population of Africa are infected with HIV?

Did you that in Mali the adult literacy rate is only 19.04%?

These are facts. Statistical information that actually means something. Not banter or opinion. This information counts and proves that there are people that really do need our help. These statistics scare me.

So, I have woken to a new day. I am not going to change everything overnight….but if I don’t start somewhere, I will continue to do nothing, and to me that is so much worse then making even the smallest of differences.

So I present a challenge to all website owners and everyone who sells something on the net, to donate at least 10% of there personal income, to one of the reputable charities you can find on the site I have attached below. This site is free and is not mine, nor am I associated with this site in anyway. My only interest is helping. I am a firm believer that, “If you give from your heart, you shall receive what your heart desires”.

I am excited. I am no longer the girl that sits on her butt, moaning about things I know nothing about. I am doing something about it. What are you going to do?
